Field Assignment 002: Orienting Worship

Every religious gathering includes people whose actions shape the practice of others. Your task is to determine how leadership becomes visible.

Leadership may appear through speech, movement, placement, timing, ritual expertise, or actions that others follow.

Review the interview archive and identify clues about how ritual leadership is expressed. Then guide your field partner to document:

  • One moment when a religious leader initiates or directs the practice.
  • One moment when the community visibly responds or participates.

Compare the two observations. What relationship do they reveal?

Use the curated interviews below to identify how leadership and participation may become visible in ritual practice. Listen for clues about who begins actions, guides their sequence, handles important objects, speaks with authority, or enables others to participate.
